The statue of Saint Ulrich demonstrates the versatility of 3D concrete printing. Not only can the SPI method be used for new-build architecture or cutting-edge design objects – it can also contribute to preserving built, sacral or atistic heritage.

The 3D printed statue is based on a historical wooden statue of Saint Ulrich, dating back to the 17th century. It was found recently in the parish church of Lengmoos (Ritten, South Tyrol) that celebrated its 800th anniversary this year. To preserve the historical artefcat in a controlled indoor environment, a larger-than-life version of the original was produced using our Selective Paste Intrusion technology. The new 3D concrete statue remains outdoors on the grounds of the former cemetery.

In order to 3D print the new statue, a high-resolution 3D scan of the old one was created by Atelier 3DW. After minor adjustments and an additional sockle including an inscription to remember the occasion, also 3D printed in concrete, the files could be sent to the SPI printer.

Since there is a lack of craftsmen and artists capable of carving a such complex object from wood, 3D concrete printing became a viable option, given a tight schedule on top. The printing itself took merely three hours, allowing for an on-demand production and supplying the statue in time for the festivities.

The statue was officially consecrated by the bishop of South Tyrol on August 15, 2025, coinciding with the annual Ferragosto celebration as well as the church's 800th anniversary.
